How do air compressors work?

How do they work? Do you have to get them re filled or do they re fill themselves? And I’m not talking about the little $40 ones people get for filling bike tires. I mean the real ones used for air tools, car painting, etc.

either a gas or an electric motor will turn a pump inside the pump is a piston every time the piston goes down a valve opens and it pulls in air and closes when its at the bottom when the piston goes back up another valve opens and the piston pushes air out of the valve and into the tank an continues to do this untill the tank reaches a preset pressure setting suck as (150 psi)cby the factory and stops the motor once the tank gets down to a certian psi the motor starts back up and the process starts over
